You Are My Personal Hell

You Are My Personal Hell is a five-minute fixed-media track for voice and electronics, commissioned for Women in Turkish Electronic Music, the compilation released by the Brussels label Sub Rosa in 2024.

It is a love song in the form of an accusation, or the other way around. A sung line — close-miked, unaffected, almost a lullaby — is slowly surrounded by its own processed double: pitch-shifted down into the floor, stretched into a drone, chopped into a stuttering rhythm that turns the word hell into a hi-hat. The voice never raises itself. The electronics do all the shouting. By the end the original line is barely audible under what it has become, which is roughly what the title describes.

It sits at the hinge between my concert work and the persona work that followed, and it opened that door.
