sound design for theatre · İkincikat · directed by Eyüp Emre Uçaray
Vibratör Oyunu — the vibrator play — is a twenty-minute piece by the Istanbul company İkincikat, directed by Eyüp Emre Uçaray and staged in 2016, for which I designed the sound.
The play is a frank, funny and finally angry short about women’s pleasure and the men who legislate it, and the sound was made entirely from hum — electrical hum, the motor of a small appliance recorded close, fluorescent light, a refrigerator — tuned and layered into a slowly shifting drone that is at first comic, then erotic, then, as the play turns, oppressive: the sound of a whole building humming in judgment. A single sung note, mine, enters near the end and does not hum along.
It was the second of my collaborations with İkincikat, and the one in which I found how far a single kind of sound could be made to travel.
