sound design and music for theatre · Clout Theatre · directed by Mine Çerçi
Harikulade Bir Çiftin Badireli Ev Yaşamı — the turbulent home life of a wonderful couple — is a fifty-minute play produced by Clout Theatre in London in 2016, directed by Mine Çerçi, for which I composed the music and designed the sound.
The play is a domestic comedy that keeps slipping into something darker, and the score was written to do the slipping for it. The music of the couple’s home is cheerful, a little too cheerful — a waltz on a toy piano, a radio tune, the kettle — and each time it returns it has been detuned a little further and slowed a little more, until by the final scene the same waltz is unrecognisable, a slow, warped thing playing under the same bright lines. The sound of the flat — doors, plumbing, the neighbours — was recorded and used as rhythm.
It was my first work outside Turkey, and the first time I understood that a score can lie on behalf of a play.
