The Ceremony of Almost Saying is a ritual built on one sentence the body will not release — a single dangerous, precious thing that every fragment of the piece is pulled toward. The composer knows the sentence; the audience never hears it. It is not a confession. It is a method of survival.

Eight ceremonies and a short tonal interlude — Before the Word · The Mouth Remembers · The Reed and the Word · The One Clear Saying · The Brass Remains · The Surface Speaks · False Grammar · The Ceremony · The Missing Word — distribute that labour across a strict hierarchy of forces. The voice is the body that cannot say the sentence. The euphonium is the missing word it carries: it does not accompany the voice, it is the thing she cannot say, and every time it enters the unsaid sentence comes closer. The clarinet is a temporary, failed articulator, trying to shape breath into consonant and failing. The Ebru instrument — a marbling tray read by contact microphones and an overhead camera — is the permanent witness, recording each attempt as an unstable trace and generating the form: a drop admits a new sound, an expansion turns vowel into pitch, a drag begins rhythm, a rupture distorts any speech that becomes clear. Objects are punctuation only; electronics are memory and erasure only.

The whole piece is tuned in just intonation on the harmonic series of a B♭ at 58 Hz, felt as a body rather than a key. Through the first six ceremonies only four partials are heard — B♭, F, D, A♭ — until the crack: a sung cry on A and then an F quarter-sharp, the one pitch outside the field, deliberate, never corrected, while the euphonium overblows its pedal B♭. Hold the ear inside a spectrum for sixteen minutes, then break it once. The final phrase is planted in pieces across the evening — what I… · I could not… · say… · was— — and withheld until the end, when she stops before the word and the euphonium carries it as sound.

The piece belongs to Fluid Narratives and was premiered on 8 June 2026 at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg by Hermes Ensemble with the composer at voice, objects and tray.
