sound design and music for theatre · Berika Collective · directed by Ufuk Şenel & Can Bora
Tavşan Deliği — the rabbit hole — is a fifty-minute theatre production by the Berika Collective, directed by Ufuk Şenel and Can Bora, which premiered in Istanbul in 2018. I composed the music and designed the sound.
The play is a loose descent through Alice’s tunnel into the present, and the score was built as a single falling gesture spread across the evening: each scene pitched slightly lower, slightly slower, slightly more processed than the last, so that the audience arrives at the bottom without having noticed the drop. The material is small — a music box, a clock, a recorded child’s voice, a single chord on a detuned piano — and recurs in changed forms; in the last scene all of it plays at once, very quietly, at the bottom of the hole.
It was the second of my collaborations with Berika, and the one in which I learned to compose for a room rather than a concert.
