sound design for theatre · İkincikat · directed by Eyüp Emre Uçaray
Işıltılı Haşereler — glittering vermin — is a ten-minute short play by the Istanbul company İkincikat, directed by Eyüp Emre Uçaray, staged in 2017, for which I made the sound.
The text is a fast, glittering monologue about the small creatures that live in a city apartment and the larger ones that live in the city, and the sound was made to match: a dense, clicking, chittering texture built from close recordings of insects, zips, keys and fingernails, pitched and layered until it shimmered, under which a slow bass tone rises over the ten minutes until, at the last line, it is all that is left.
It was the third of my collaborations with İkincikat and the most compressed — ten minutes, one gesture, no music to speak of, and the loudest response I have had from a theatre audience.
