Beyond

Beyond is an hour-long performance by Can Bora and Ufuk Şenel, premiered at the Amsterdam Fringe Festival in September 2021, for which I composed the music and sound design.

The piece follows two figures through a series of thresholds — doors, screens, the edge of the stage light — without ever letting them arrive anywhere, and the sound was written as the space beyond each one: an electroacoustic score in long, continuous scenes, built from processed voice, breath and the recorded sounds of the rehearsal room itself, so that the theatre seemed to be listening back. Live, the score was played from the booth and followed the performers’ timing rather than a fixed cue sheet.

It grew out of the video and dance work the three of us had made together in Istanbul, and it remains the largest-scale theatre score I have written.
